title:{if i were the loner..}

With my back against the wall,
I stared at the others chasing the ball.
They were running and laughing care freely,
as I looked on enviously.

I didn’t know what was keeping me,
from saying that simple greeting.
Yet I still remain there,
watching every spark of their energy.

they walked past me in their own groups,
and i wonder when the day would come,
When one of them dares to talk,
to the odd-one-out left far behind.

My mum told me that we were moving,
that silent Monday evening.
As I gave my friend on last hug,
I wonder if the others were going to budge.

Today I’m going to another place,
All again repeating my life,
I have marked my space,
As I’ll be back one day..

What are your impressions of the boy as well as of the children in the poem?

Boy:
Well, I think that the boy is anti-social and shy. He obviously doesn’t have any friends and likes being alone. He somehow never tried to make friends; “back against the wall he stays-and never plays” and like the line in the poem states, he never mixed around with the other children. The wall is his ‘friend’ and he is always there, against it. He may be feeling insecure and needed ‘support’ from the wall. But he is always feeling bored; “smacks his hands against the bricks and other boredom-beating-tricks”, this explains that he is always bored and had nothing better to do. It also means that he is too bored to even bother about the pain as he continues hitting his hands against the bricks. The line “his loneness is his shell and shield” shows me that he hides beneath his ‘shield’ from the other children. It may also be that he has phobia of conversing with people. I feel that the writings on the wall are by the boy himself. It may be to tell that he would return one day. He may come back as a different person with a whole different personality.

Children:
The children seem to be enjoying themselves, playing, shouting in the playground. They are in their own cliques unlike the loner who is standing against the wall all by himself. The quote “strife doesn’t last long” tells me that the arguments and fights among the children doesn’t last long and that they were able to reconcile their differences. The children seem to ignore the loner and somehow don’t want to confront him. “Pass by him and never speak” this implies that the children do talk and gossip about the boy. They might be trying to avoid being friends with the boy as they fear that they too would be classified as ‘loners’. I believe that if they had tried being friends with him, there would not be any loners and the boy would have a chance to have a happy childhood.

>do i sympathize with The Joker?

I am not sure to say if i really sympathize with him as he had caused major problems. -He’s a cunning man that makes use of other people for he’s own good. he is also very selfish and refuses to share the money. he is very malicious and takes other people's lives lightly.- But, i could somehow sympathize with him as it is not clear if he was really doing this for himself. he may be the sole breadwinner of the family. he could probably have had a hard and troubled childhood and is struggling to discover who he is. he may be doing this not for the money but, for taking refuge against batman. in all, i could say that i'm sympathizing with him half the time.

>what have i learnt from this lesson:

I have learnt that we should not judge a person from the way he/she looks. I have also learnt to understand the character and to think deeply from the character's point of view -empathize with the character.

well, thats all i have to say..
